Finding Your Ikigai: Aligning Your Career & Your Purpose -- Dec 16 PEN Webinar

Finding Your Ikigai: Aligning Your Career & Your Purpose -- Dec 16 PEN Webinar

Registration is closed for this event
We're all dealing with a lot: a continuing global pandemic, changes in work environment and other organizational challenges (staffing shortages, supply chain issues, workplace toxicity), and the stresses of constant work/life pressures, many are reexamining how their professional lives align or harmonize with their purpose and passions.  And -- as the holidays approach and the year winds down -- what a great time to reflect on work/life balance. Japanese workers are known to work long hours in workplaces with strict rules.  Hierarchy is generally the rule of the land -- and the workplace.  Overwork is common.  So how do they differ from Americans?  Some research shows that they are better at finding their “Ikigai” -- the intersection of their life’s mission, passion, profession, and vocation.  As a result, they can find more balance and harmony between their professional and personal lives -- something that, in today's environment, is so desired by most of us.

The Performance Excellence Network — in partnership with the Wisconsin Center for Performance Excellence — is pleased to host an online webinar discussion on Thursday, December 16: "Finding Your Ikigai: Aligning Your Career & Your Purpose."  The discussion will feature the insights of Irene Kelly, Leadership & Academic Coach with Prisma LLC.  Since Irene can't join us live December 16, the webinar will be delivered in a unique format: we'll view her remarks delivered at a previous PEN event years ago, then pause the recording a few times for discussion and interaction -- a chance to reflect on the content, share and explore ideas with others.

Hector Garcia and Francesc Miralles, authors of Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life, lived in Okinawa while researching their book.  They learned that Okiawans are among the happiest people in the world, only eat until they are 80% full, and don’t retire.  They labeled their state of being “Ikigai,” which is said to have its origins on the island of Okinawa.  While it has no literal English translation, Ikigai is said to mean “a reason for being.”  According to Japanese culture, everyone has an Ikigai.  Finding it requires a deep and often lengthy search of self.

Ikigai is based on answering four key questions:

  • What do you love to do?
  • What are you good at?
  • What does the world need?
  • What can you be paid for?

The intersection of those four produces your Ikigai -- a balance that leads to fulfillment and satisfaction, your reason for getting up each morning!

Join us to explore the tenets of Ikigai and how you can apply it to your life.  Leave the session with a clearer picture of your purpose for being here so that you can make your most important contributions at work -- and in the community. In today's environment -- with the backdrop of a continuing global pandemic, the stresses of constant work/life pressures, and the urge perhaps to explore other career pathways (one of the drivers of the Great Resignation), the timing of a year-end reflective discussion like this couldn't be better!

This session is Thursday, December 16 from 8:00-9:00 CT (optional speed networking and mingling 7:45-8:00), using Zoom MEETING. Grab your coffee and breakfast, and join us for a rich discussion. Free for PEN/WCPE members; $20 for non-members.

Can’t make it live but interested in the content?  Register anyway: all registered attendees get a link to the recording after the session!
